THE SURROUNDING LOCATION OF ALSTON, CUMBRIA, UK

Alston Town Centre

Alston nestles high in the North Pennines, with a steep Main Street, Market Cross and started in 2021 work will continue over the next few years to replace the cobbles for which Alston is famous.

A good selection of shops will meet all day to day needs. Post Office, well stocked Co-op, Wholefood Shop, Bakery, two garages serving fuel and a Butcher and delicatessen situated within the Spar shop. Add to this gift and craft shops, pubs, hotels, cafes, a book shop, hardware shop and a couple of ‘Takeaways’.

  • The Alston Tourist Information Centre is situated in the Old Town Hall at the foot of the Main Street.
  • A Veterinary practice is situated at the top of the town and the GP practice next to the cottage hospital.
  • The Pennine Way footpath passes through Alston as does the C2C cycle route.
Epiacum Roman Fort

A well preserved historic site with the Nook Farm Shop and Tea Room making for an interesting visit.   https://www.epiacumheritage.org  

Ashgill Force

Ashgill Force is a natural waterfall just a few miles outside Alston on the B6277 road to Middleton in Teesdale. Travel further along this road and you can access Cow Green Reservoir and High Force, an even more spectacular waterfall.

South Tynedale Railway

A heritage narrow gauge railway runs from Alston Station to Slaggyford in the season. Often Steam hauled, the trains are run and maintained by volunteers -this is a labour of love. Ghyll Burn Cottage

One of the finest holiday cottages in Cumbria, Ghyll Burn Cottage was converted from buildings dating back to approx 1680, at time when people lived upstairs and animals kept in byres underneath, Ghyll Burn Cottage is full of old world charm with beamed ceilings and a wood-burning stove.

Dog friendly cottages in Cumbria

Looking for Dog friendly cottages in Cumbria? This lovely cosy converted Barn has views to Alston and the Pennines. The front door opens into a light and airy conservatory with table and chairs to enjoy the sunshine.

General Information

 

Arrival time

From 4pm on day of arrival  and departure time is 10am to allow for cleaning.

 

Bed Linen and Towels

are provided.

 

Deposit

£100 is charged at time of booking and the balance is due six weeks before the start of the holiday.

 

Dogs

We accept dogs in both Barn End and Ghyll Burn Cottage and you are welcome to bring your pets with you.

Please discuss with us at time of booking.

If you can, please bring your dogs bed or cage for sleeping and we request you do not allow your dogs on the furniture or in the bedrooms at any time.

We do not have an enclosed garden, but have a designated dog walking area and ask that you clean up after your dog and dispose of dog waste hygienically. We are surrounded by farmland so please keep dogs on a lead when stock is present.

 

Smoking

Smoking is not allowed in either cottage. If smoking outside please make sure all cigarette ends are disposed of safely and not left on the ground.
