Alston Town Centre

Alston Town Centre

Alston nestles high in the North Pennines, with a steep Main Street, Market Cross and started in 2021 work will continue over the next few years to replace the cobbles for which Alston is famous.

A good selection of shops will meet all day to day needs. Post Office, well stocked Co-op, Wholefood Shop, Bakery, two garages serving fuel and a Butcher and delicatessen situated within the Spar shop. Add to this gift and craft shops, pubs, hotels, cafes, a book shop, hardware shop and a couple of ‘Takeaways’.

  • The Alston Tourist Information Centre is situated in the Old Town Hall at the foot of the Main Street.
  • A Veterinary practice is situated at the top of the town and the GP practice next to the cottage hospital.
  • The Pennine Way footpath passes through Alston as does the C2C cycle route.

South Tynedale Railway

South Tynedale Railway

A heritage narrow gauge railway runs from Alston Station to Slaggyford in the season. Often Steam hauled, the trains are run and maintained by volunteers -this is a labour of love. Please check timetables on the STRPS website:  https://www.south-tynedale-railway.org.uk

  • Alongside the railway line you can join  the South Tyne Trail footpath/ cycle route which runs from the source of the South Tyne to Haltwhistle.
